America's 250th

Celebrate America’s 250th in Annapolis

On July 4, 2026, the United States turns 250, and in Annapolis, the milestone feels especially close to home. This harbor city played a meaningful role in the nation’s early years and even served briefly as the country’s capital.

Walk through downtown and the history still feels close here. Brick streets follow the same paths early American leaders once took, colonial taverns still welcome travelers, and the Chesapeake Bay continues to shape daily life. At Annapolis Waterfront Hotel, the harbor is right outside your door, with the historic district, waterfront traditions, and anniversary celebrations just steps away.

Where the Revolutionary Story Still Lives

Few places preserve the Revolutionary era as completely as Annapolis. The city’s original 1695 street plan still guides visitors through more than a hundred colonial-era buildings.

At the Maryland State House, the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use, George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief in 1783, setting a powerful precedent for civilian leadership. Inside, visitors can view the chamber where the Treaty of Paris was ratified, formally ending the Revolutionary War.

Nearby, the William Paca House and Garden, a restored home of a Maryland signer of the Declaration of Independence, reopens in the spring. A short walk away, the Museum of Historic Annapolis explores the city’s colonial past through significant artifacts like the rebellious “death’s head” stamp used to protest the Stamp Act of 1765.

Across town, the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum offers a broader view of American history through exhibitions on African American heritage in Maryland and the wider Chesapeake region.

Your Harborfront Home Base

Set directly on the water beside City Dock, Annapolis Waterfront Hotel places you at the center of Annapolis life. Sailboats drift across Spa Creek, dockhands call across the harbor, and the scent of world-famous Chesapeake crab cakes drifts from nearby kitchens.

Step outside and you’re within minutes of the shops and cafés of downtown, the historic homes of Maryland’s Declaration signers, and the waterfront paths connecting Annapolis to Eastport. Or, head to the South River to visit Historic London Town and Gardens, a former colonial port where gardens, archaeology, and the restored William Brown House bring the 18th century to life.

After a day exploring, return to harbor views, fresh coastal flavors, and the easy rhythm of a port city that has welcomed travelers for centuries.
